The backbone of high school

BRUNSWICK, OH – There are many necessary tools to being successful in high school. The books a student uses, the teachers who are there to inspire them, and the class work that is given to enhance learning. The most important tool is the people students surround themselves with. “A huge part of high school is the lessons you learn, both inside and out of the classroom,” explains David Kelty, a sophomore at Brunswick High School. Every experience in high school is created by the group of friends people associate with. “Friends are the second biggest factor to success in high school. Your friends will make you sink or float,” says Zak Petrenko, senior.

Groups of friends get together for Friday night football games, where seniors are painted, and pictures are taken. Each person sits by their friends which makes the game more enjoyable. To most students, the win or loss of the team doesn’t stop them from going to games; they continue to have fun no matter what the score is. Fans chant and cheer for their favorite players and mock the rival teams. Even when the game is far from a win, the student section is still spirited, staying until the very end.

Whether they have known each other since elementary school or met for the first time this year, many people agree that nothing in high school would be as memorable without their peers. A friend can be one of the most valuable things to have as a teenager. It can be a funny friend who makes the whole class laugh, or a loyal friend who is always willing to listen and support others. There are also honest friends who confront others when they’re wrong. The type of people students chooses to be around has a huge impact on their life.

In high school, a student encounters rumors, drama, lies, heartbreaks, and great amount of stress. It’s hard to find a genuine friend, but when one is found, they can completely change lives. “The people you surround yourself with in high school can affect the way you look at things which could positively or negatively affect the rest of your life,” says Kelty.

It is important to have somebody to talk to about a horrible test, a bad break up, or a stressful day. “My friends help get me through each school day and give me something else to think about so that I don’t become overwhelmed,” says Jack Ellis, a junior at Brunswick High School.  Students need to surround themselves with friends that they can trust, friends that will be a backbone when they need it most. High school is filled with learning, not only through books and teachers, but through peers. A good friend is one quality thing that every student needs.
